SAINT MARGARET

Saint Margaret of Scotland was born in 1046.

She was a descendant of King Alfred, of burn cakes fame. The family had been exiled by King Canute. Eventually the family were allowed to return to England and Margaret met and married the Scottish King Malcolm III in 1069.

Queen Margaret not only Christianised the court but also introduced Christian principles into everyday life, such as courtesy and table manners. She instigated the Easter Day services.

Her presence is still felt today in Scotland with the bridge at Queensferry. Queen Margaret began the ferry service over the River Clyde so that pilgrims could more easily access the shrine to St. Andrew on the other side of the river.

St Margaret was cannonised in 1250.
